Working From Home

So long as I’m making cases, I’d like to make one in favor of working from home. I’m surprised more companies don’t embrace this as part of their policy. Having done it 3 days a week for the past 2 months, I can tell you that it not only saves on gas (duh) but it enhances your productivity. The kind of work I do, I’m able to do it any time I like, so if I have an idea at 9:30 pm or on a weekend, I can run in, boot up, connect, and get it done right then & there.

As it stands, I have a few hoops to jump through in order to get me home full time but I’m going to pursue it!

The Pay Per View Model

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on May 29th, 2007

This story basically contains my argument for a pay per view television model.

For the past year, I’ve ceased watching network television in favor of purchasing iTunes TV shows mostly because they do not contain commercials. I’ll glady pay $1.99 for a TV show I admire (The Shield, Weeds, Battlestar Galactica, Lost) so long as I do not see a single commercial. Yes, I hate commercials that much.

“You’d save money with a DVR or TiVo,” is the response I often get when I tell people this. But the popularity of DVR and TiVo is the reason commercial content is now being inserted into the program itself (read the above-linked story). The act of purchasing only the shows I’m interested in watching is having the same effect as that of a nielsen rating. In this scenario, my money is a vote, a bribe, and a payoff. Is it more expensive my way? Yes. I realize not everyone is willing to do that but what the hell do I care? Like I’m a big crowd-follower. Yeah, that’s me.

I watch a lot of HBO too, and with the On-Demand option, I get much the same net result. Although, I am getting a little sick of those sappy self-promotional HBO montages they show before each new Sopranos episode. I get embarassed for HBO each time I see them. They’re pretty terrible. The Sopranos, however, has been great. They’ve really pulled out all the stops.

Sirius Satellite radio is a pretty great thing, too. No commercials in any of their music programming and when a commercial pops up on Howard 100, I just switch it to Deep Cuts.

So I’m in a very pitch-free place right now. I’ve seen and heard more religious pitches at my front door the past year than I’ve seen or heard commercials. You should go a month or two without being exposed to a single commercial, you might like it.

Lost & Found

Is it just me or did this TV show become really good recently? That whole half-season with that pussy-ass Jack, Sawyer, and Kate being held prisoner was fucking boring! After Hurley found that VW Van (with Ben’s dead father inside), it’s good again, especially now that we know more about the island. And not for nothing, but I never want to see another back-story about any of the above mentioned doofi. Except maybe Hurley. He’s cool. Ben too.

How lame do I sound? Making a post about a dumb TV show? A new low.

Finally, The Forbidden City is Forbidden

In China, as described in this story, some yahoo threw a molotov cocktail at the portait of Mao Zedong, which hangs over Tiananmen Square in central Beijing, damaging the larger-than-life portrait and prompting police to close the nearby imperial palace.

You know, I really figured the late-80s early-90s was the time for the Chinese people to “rise up” and whatnot. I think we all remember the famous picture of that kid’s standoff with a tank in Tiananmen Square? Well, hell…this is the internet. Here’s the picture.

Anything you want is available on the internets.

Anyway, my point is that they really missed their chance. They could have pulled it off after the Berlin Wall fell and the Soviet Union was dismantled: revolution was all the rage in those days! What the hell happened since?

All Manner of “Shout-Outs”

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on May 12th, 2007

What a week it’s been. I’ve never been so busy with work and personal stuff, yet so happy with all the results. And to think a mere 9 months ago, I was majorly depressed (honesty is the best policy, just ask Billy Joel). It’s amazing what a little challenge can do to improve your mental health. Go figure.

So here’s what’s been going on…

Major wins at work & deadlines met, suffered two back injuries with accompanying trips to urgent care, was on painkillers and other drugs, sissy trimmed my hedges, my parents visited recently and in addition to throwing me a mini surprise birthday party including awesome astronomy-related gifts, dad replaced my busted garbage disposal with an “upgrade” (and he never complained once), mom helped me record background vocals on a song to be released in the coming months, Chez-V received a bevy of repairs and other upgrades, Skeet and his daughter Brittany came over to help tend my lawn (because my back was “out”), my dog Jake got a shave and a haircut (two bits), and finally all the songs I’d been working on for the last 5 years are finished and shipped out to my mixing/mastering engineer, Bryan McGee. After song copywriting, CD manufacturing, and digital song submissions are all completed, we’re looking at an early-to-mid-to-late Autumn release. Winter at the latest. OK, early-2008 at the very very latest.

So there you have it. Thank you to everyone that’s helped me over the last month or so. It’s not gone unnoticed or unappreciated.

We’ll Always Have Paris

I’d like to go on record as saying that I couldn’t give a rusty fuck what Paris Hilton does with her life.  She can go to jail.  Or not.  She can make crappy pop records. Or not.  She can get fucked in the ass.  Or not.  She can make a million dollars starring in a video in which she blows every overweight guy in Hoboken, NJ.  Or not.  She can shoot smack in a vein in her foot.  Or not.  She can do all the coke Columbia can produce.  Or not.  She can spend a zillion dollars on plastic surgery.  Or not.

Basically, she’s free to do whatever her heart desires.  Can someone out there provide me with a semblance of a compelling reason to give a smelly shit?

My Fat Dog is Suddenly Not Fat

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on May 1st, 2007

In response to a comment by one of the regular MC Loungers about how my dog wasn’t missing any meals, Jake insisted that he get a haircut to prove this joker wrong.

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves.

Late Night

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on May 1st, 2007

I was celebrating some work-related success last night but I drank a little too much, made several embarassing MySpace posts to many of my “friends” there, stayed up WAY too late and therefore woke up late, thus missing Jake’s early haircut appointment. So now, Jake’s gotta stay at the groomer all day. When he comes back, he’ll be a completely different pooch. I’ll have before & after pictures to prove it. My hangover, however, continues.
