This Old E-Mail vol 11

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on June 26th, 2006

This series of posts are workplace e-mails sent to me from 1998, back when e-mail was a relatively novel thing. Because of this, the jokes came by the truckload. Undoubtedly, your humor intake will vary.

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and shouted, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

The woman below replied, “You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You are between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.

“You must be an engineer,” said the balloonist.

“I am,” replied the woman, “how did you know?”

“Well,” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help so far.”

The woman below responded, “You must be a manager.”

“I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?”

“Well,” said the woman, “you don’t know where you are or where you are going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise which you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s my fault.

Carolina Hurricanes

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on June 14th, 2006

There was an early version of this blog in 1998. Back then we didn’t call them blogs but it was sort of a journal nonetheless. In it, I made a half-hearted attempt to display some sports-enthusiasm by having a Carolina Hurricanes page. We’d just gotten the team around that time and I made a sincere attempt to “get into” hockey. I attended the Live at Five thing they had welcoming the team to Raleigh (remember the parachute guys all touching down on their target?), I’d gone to a couple games, hell, I even dated a Canadian chick and you know how they feel about hockey.

But try as I might, I couldn’t get into it. I dunno what happened to me. I used to be a huge pro football fan back in high school but the whole thing simply holds no appeal to me.

I honestly won’t care if the ‘Canes win or lose tonight but I wish them well.
