Cancer Boy

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on June 30th, 2004

Check this story out. It’s about a 9 year old cancer patient’s Make-A-Wish-Foundation wish to make a video game. So Lucas Arts steps up to develop some kind of cancer-themed video game. Now don’t get me wrong, I have no desire to see young kids suffer from cancer. That would make me kind of evil. But I’m reminded of the Cancer Boy character from Brain Candy, the Kids in the Hall movie and the possibility that he could be the video game’s focus.

Spiderman’s Worldwide Web

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on June 30th, 2004

Looks like the hype machine is in full swing for this sequel. Everyone is saying how great it is! Roger Ebert (a man whom I deeply admire) has been quoted as saying that it may be “the best superhero film I’ve ever seen.” Big words.

Not to change the subject too much but has anyone seen Roger recently in his “At the Movies” TV program with that Roeper dude? Something happened to Ebert’s voice…he sounds like the Mayor of Munchkinland. I’m not kidding.

Anyway, Spiderman-schmiderman.

Comments On The News

On Handing Iraq over to Iraq: I wonder how long it will take for the US-installed Prime Minister Iyad Allawi to meet with an “accident.”

On the Olsen Twins: These two are a media powerhouse. Despite being successful at just about anything they do, I’d like to thank them both for not making an attempt to sing.

On President Clinton’s Political Memoirs: Why the sudden interest in politics? (this joke is the “fair and balanced” portion of today’s post)

On the US Army-sanctioned PC Game America’s Army switching to a new graphical “engine”: So now it will look better than the old version. Terrific. Now what about that patch that allows the player to beat the shit out of naked prisoners?

What a Shitty Day

A New Day

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on June 27th, 2004

I’m just making another post to test the date thingy (above the dotted line). Seems to work OK.

Hey Michael Moore’s flick Fahrenheit 9/11 did really well this weekend. Hopefully, liberals and conservatives alike went to see this film.

Have We Got A Video?

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on June 26th, 2004

YES, WE’VE GOT A VIDEO!

I purchased a Sony DCR-HC30 the other day. I’ve never owned a video camera before but I’ve used them hundreds of times in college. As usual, the software that comes with the product is absolute shit but surprisingly, the “Windows Movie Maker” that comes with Windows XP is quite effective. Uploading video is very easy via the firewire connectivity on the DCR-HC30. Fucking fast, too.

I connected my stereo mics to the input jack and it sounds pretty great. So it seems when Frank and Mike come down, we’ll be documenting video instead of just sound. What fun!

Feedback Welcome

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on June 26th, 2004

As of today, the feedback thingy has been enabled, nearly exactly as I wanted. So feel free to post your feedback. Frankly, I’m amazed that I was able to get this working so quickly, seeing how pathetically little I know about CSS. The nice thing about this WordPress system is that you’re not required to supply your e-mail address. I hate having to do that just to tell some opinionated jackass to go fuck himself.

That concern I had for the low number of feedback posts is not baseless, but do I really give a shit? Not so much.

Hey, check this guy’s page about his recent experiences in Europe. He’s a guy who makes a home-made steadicam rig for camcorders. It’s a pretty good rant.

Originally, I wanted to put a message board of some kind here. But there’s nothing more sad than seeing some dude’s message board with 3 posts for the month. So only if my usage statistics get larger, I’ll put up a board.

Until then, you’re going to have to deal with my opinions. Geez, I sound just like Fox News. Shivers down me spine!

On second thought, that attitude doesn’t really make a lot of sense. So what if I get 3 posts per month? At least I won’t be suppressing the exchange of ideas, which should be thought of as an abhorrent practice to everyone reading this.

So…be on the lookout for a message board of some kind.

I have access to PHP-Nuke which is a content management system but I think it’s way more than I need. All I want is to be able to add a link to the lower corner of each entry, allowing users to post feedback. I’ll work on it but don’t expect any quick miracles or anything.

Michael Moore’s new film Fahrenheit 9/11 opens today, despite conservatives’ attempts at ignoring the first amendment. I think it’s funny there’s no pro-Bush documentary out in theaters now. Why not? What would you fill such a film with? Ho ho ho.

Seriously though, conservatives are better at blocking free speech than engaging it, which takes a modicum of effort.

Anyone who knows me at all knows that I was not a fan of Moore’s Bowling for Columbine, which featured such fabrication that it was difficult to pay attention to the message. Hopefully, his new film will place more of an emphasis on accuracy and less on creative editing.

Games: I was cleaning out some closets in my house when I discovered all this golden-age computer gaming stuff. So I dusted off one of my unused PCs and loaded some titles from PC gaming’s renaissance period: Doom, Wing Commander, System Shock, Mechwarrior, Duke Nukem 3D, etc. I even hooked a 5 1/4 inch floppy drive up to install those really old games like Wolfenstein 3D. I’m having a blast in the way-back machine!

DVD: Nine episodes of the groundbreaking comedy series SCTV have been released on DVD, which I recently purchased. In fact, I bought 3 of them. One for me and two as gifts. It can be said that SCTV is credited/faulted for molding my sense of humor as a youngster of 10.

I remember fondly taping each episode as it aired in the late seventies with one of those boxy Panasonic cassette recorders (we didn’t have a VCR yet). Those tapes are long gone but I listened to them so often I know those skits by rote.

I’m looking forward to future SCTV volumes because this set (while packed with good stuff like Polynesiantown, Moral Majority, Lola Heatherton Bouncin’ Back to You, Great White North steals another show’s guest, Fantasy Island featuring John Candy as Tattoo, Yellowbelly, and many more) is lacking some of the really really funny sketches:

  • CCCP1 Russian Television takeover / Red Rooster
  • Alfred Hitchcock Presents (“Cecil, do you think I’m pretty with my eyes bulging out like this?”)
  • Pippi Longsocks
  • Doorway to Hell, with Mr. Wilcox and the Dummy with “powerful wooden hands”
  • Walter Cronkite vs. David Brinkley
  • The Jazz Singer, with Al Jarrau
  • Count Floyd’s Monster Chiller Horror Theatre with the Bloodsucking Monkeys from West Mifflin, PA.
  • Lust for Paint (“your paintings could hang in the Louvre-vr-vr-vr-vr-vr !!!”)
  • Pre-Teen World with Rough Trade
  • Farm Film Report where they blow up Brooke Shields
  • Midnight Express Special
  • New York Rhapsody with violinist Eugene Fodor
  • Anyway, as you can see, much time has been spent thinking about this nonsense. So let’s get cracking!

Music News: I’ve nearly completed a demo for “Eardrums & Airplanes” to send to one of my session musicians, Dean Katsiris, who will fondle those keys for me. Hold on Deaner, it’s coming…

Also in music news, Frank Piper, my original guitarist/band member from way back when, will be joining Mike Sweeney and myself for a week’s worth of musical fusion late in July. I plan to record the jam sessions and post selected clips.

Al Qaeda have beheaded another American, this time an employee of Lockheed Martin. I mentioned to a co-worker the other day that religion tends to do more harm than good in the world. This war would be a good example, since both side claim to be fighting in the name of God.

Why does Al Qaeda have to be so damn headstrong? Why do they not see that violence is no way to get ahead in their struggles? Bush and Blair have proved that two heads are better than one. For the longest time, I thought Bush had his head up his ass but now I see the light.

Figured I’d post this only because I think it’s hilarious.

BREAKING NEWS: my new neice Allison was born at 1:30 p.m. today. She is my brother Steven’s daughter. Mother and baby are fine. Congrats, Beaver-man!

OK, so we’ve had an entire week of Ronald Regan and I’m looking forward to dropping it already. Let’s get to the election at hand, shall we?

On HBO’s On The Record last night, Tom Brokaw said it best, “people in this country are so hungry for a larger-than-life leader; someone who has strong convictions and is unafraid to voice them.” Sadly, that’s not what politics is about.

Site news: upon bugging the Norwegians, they fixed a couple annoying things in the Flash animations.

That was a nice little break. No big deal.

On the road from Rt 85 to Rt 1 South at 5:00 pm yesterday, there was a “micro burst” of one of the hardest rain storms I’ve been a witness to. Of course, the local-yokels didn’t realize that their cars could still function in such weather. But I was home finally, so I didn’t care.

In the mail waiting for me was a notice for jury duty. Since no one reads this website, I’ll post a blow-by-blow account of the trial if I’m chosen. That’ll be fun. Truth is, I think I’d be really good as a juror. I don’t follow the news very closely so it’s not likely that I’ve formed any opinions. Plus, I’ve seen Twelve Angry Men and a Baby enough times to know that I identify with the Ed Begley Sr. character the most. So there you go.
