The Last Track

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 28th, 2002

Speaking of the bass track in Ombudsman, Mr. Curtis nailed that puppy in a few hours last night. Now is the time for re-mixing, mastering, taking photos and completing the booklet layout. I’ll see you at the release party in October.

Signing off until then…

Ozone

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 24th, 2002

Using Ozone, I’ve already arranged global mastering settings for all 21 tracks of Where I Am. Their mastering guide is very well written and makes using the DirectX plugin so damned easy! I should have purchased Ozone years ago. All the tracks sound great and I’m very pleased. Once Don and I lay that last bass track, I should be finished earlier than I’d planned.

Cost Savings

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 22nd, 2002

I’ve decided to master the CD myself, as opposed to having Discmakers.com do it. The reason? The biggest reason is the money. But the other reason is a new mastering tool has become available that will make the tedious mastering process much, much easier. This tool called Ozone is from the fine folks at iZotope and it’s 2/3 cheaper than what Discmakers was going to charge me. That’s a no-brainer to me. Discmakers is still going to mass-produce it, but I’m going to provide the finished CD rather than a pre-master. I feel like I’m rambling.

Even Closer

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 18th, 2002

This weekend, I completed vocals for Ready, Ombudsman, Where I Am, and Gemini. I also added an additional guitar track to Where I Am. All that’s left is Don Curtis’ bass on Ombudsman and the CD will be done.

Out of curiosity, I mixed all 21 tracks down and placed them end to end. The running time will be about 62 minutes.

Vocals Suckage

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 15th, 2002

Last night, I did vocals for The Village Idiot and re-recorded vocals for Beautiful (of course). I may end up re-recording all the vocals 5 times over because I keep finding things wrong with the current set. It’s been more difficult than I expected. I’m not a natural singer by any stretch of the imagination so I really have to strain myself at times. Anyway, the chart has never looked so green before!

Counterclockwise

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 13th, 2002

I did a “nooner” today. I was in the mood to do some quick recording so I did two vocal tracks for Counterclockwise. I even added effects and mixed them to completion so that’s another song down. Woo Hoo!

Craziness

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 11th, 2002

It was a very big weekend.

Not only did I complete vocals for four songs (Ben Fong-Torres, Beautiful, The Assault, and The Cotton Panel of Justice) but I also saw Blondie at Walnut Creek on Thursday, went to the Durham Bulls game on Saturday, took Jake to the vet for his terrible cough, and met up with Don Curtis to arrange Ombudsman.

This is craziness: I never spread myself out like that! If I do one big thing all weekend, I deem it busy. But this weekend was nutsy! This next week is reserved for me, Jake and the CD that will be the death of me.

Madman (Dewey)

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 5th, 2002

I can’t stop. I’m a madman. I just recorded a nice, light accordion arrangement for The Village Idiot and it turned out great. I know what you’re thinking…accordion?? Trust me. Daddy’s got it under control.

I saw Don Curtis in the parking lot after work, the slacker that he is. I said, “hey, when the hell are you going to do that bass track for Ombudsman goddammit??” Well, maybe I didn’t say that, but we’re going to get together this weekend or the next and nail that puppy down. No offense, Jake.

Speaking of Don Curtis, he turns 32 on August 7th. Happy Birthday, you spring chicken!

Big Day

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 4th, 2002

Today was a big, big day. Not only did I complete everything I set out to complete, I did all my laundry, too. Hey, I hate doing laundry, alright? Anyway, I did 3 acoustic tracks for The Village Idiot, bass and electric guitar on Beautiful.

A funny thing happened with Beautiful actually. Each time I listed to the pre-master, something didn’t sound quite right. I figured it was ear fatigue or what-have-you. But I always heard it. Finally, I figured out what it was. The drum track had this goofy syncopation that didn’t fit with the instrumental arrangement. I thought to myself, “oh Christ, don’t tell me I have to start over!” But I went in, re-did the drum track with a better-fitting beat, and now Beautiful sounds so much better, I think I actually like the song now.

So now, all the major instrumentation is completed. Next week, I start singing. “Mi mi mi!”

The Net Is Closing

Posted by Christopher Van Epps on August 3rd, 2002

Last night, I did two acoustic tracks for Beautiful and the bass track for The Village Idiot, with Criggy as engineer.

Getting real close to the end here and I’m looking forward to finishing. Today and tomorrow, I’d like to finish all instrumentation, except for Don Curtis’ bass parts in Gemini (which needs to be re-recorded) and Ombudsman. That way, all I have left is the vocals, which is comparatively easy and quick.
